Are You a Tree Hugger Like Me? How Planting Trees Can Make a Difference

One of my favorite things about spring is watching trees come to life. Our weeping cherry tree 🌸 in the front yard is fleeting and magical — its blossoms seem to appear overnight. You have to stop and notice, or you’ll miss them entirely.

In honor of Arbor Day, I wanted to share a few ways we can celebrate trees, the benefits they bring, and some inspiration to help you connect with nature this season.

Why Arbor Day Matters

Arbor Day began in Nebraska in 1872, when it’s estimated that one million trees were planted on the very first day! Today, Arbor Day is celebrated across the U.S. and around the world, with a mission to:

“Inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees.”

Unlike Earth Day, which focuses broadly on environmental protection, Arbor Day celebrates trees specifically — their beauty, importance, and life-giving power.

How to Celebrate Arbor Day 🌿

Here are a few simple ways to honor trees — big or small:

1. Plant a tree in your yard
Choose a tree that fits your space, sunlight, and soil conditions. Follow a few key steps to help it thrive — and watch it grow year after year.

2. Support a tree-planting organization
Groups like Click A Tree plant trees in vulnerable regions around the world while creating jobs for local communities. You can even choose to plant trees for elephants in Thailand, Kenya, or India — or for coastal forests in the Philippines and Madagascar.

3. Explore nature up close
Visit a local garden, nature center, or community forest. Hands-on experiences are one of the best ways to learn about and appreciate the environment.

4. Plant something small
Even a little herb garden on your windowsill or a patio planter adds greenery to your life — and every plant helps!

Why Trees Matter

Trees aren’t just beautiful — they’re essential. According to the Arbor Day Foundation, they:

  • Clean our air & improve air quality

  • Support mental health & well-being

  • Provide oxygen & help purify water

  • Shelter wildlife

  • Increase property values & beautify neighborhoods

  • Cool spaces & save energy

  • Reduce climate change effects & even crime

Every tree you plant, nurture, or simply admire contributes to a healthier, happier planet.

I love seeing the magnolia trees flowering. Their blossoms are so HUGE!

Beautiful Books About Trees

Teaching art in public schools for many years gave me a deep appreciation and love of picture books. They provide such a beautiful and expansive way to learn for both adults and children. I thought I would share a few of my favorite, amazingly beautiful books about trees with you.

A Gentle Reminder

We all share the same planet, and every little thing we do collectively makes a difference. Plant a tree, nurture a plant, or simply pause to notice the beauty around you. Maybe you’ll be inspired — I know I am.

Happy Arbor Day!
