For the Love of Trees, Painting & the Earth

*I’ve refreshed this post to share new memories, paintings, and ideas for connecting with trees and the Earth this season.

I have fallen in love with many trees in my life, but the one that holds the biggest place in my heart was at my Grammy & Djat’s house (Djat is what we called my grandfather). Visiting them felt like being wrapped in a warm blanket on a chilly night.

This tree seemed enormous to me as a child. Its branches swaddled me in love, just like my grandparents did. One branch extended straight out and then swooped upward, creating the perfect little seat — like a swing — just right for “being” or climbing. It made me feel adventurous and safe all at once.

Inspired by the tree at my grandparents’ house, this painting celebrates the joy and shelter trees provide. Planting a tree in your yard can create similar spaces for play, reflection, and life for wildlife.

Dreaming of Trees

When I learned that this year’s Earth Day theme is “Trees for the Earth”, I started dreaming about what kind of tree to plant in our garden this year. Our yard has evolved from almost no trees to lush garden beds layered with color and life.

Brett and I plant something new each year, always keeping bees, butterflies, birds, and other creatures in mind. I am mindful of the many forests cleared without thought for the creatures that live there. I know I can’t change the whole world, but I can do one small thing where I live. Imagine if we all did.

Practical Tree Inspiration

Maybe there’s a tree you’d like to plant in your yard. The Arbor Day Foundation has a wonderful Tree Wizard that recommends trees and shrubs perfect for your space, sunlight, and even whether you want a flowering, fruit, or nut tree.

Reflections on Our Planet

I was surprised — and saddened — to learn that our planet currently loses over 15 billion trees each year (equivalent to 48 football fields every minute!). It reminded me of one of my favorite books, The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. Trees give us so much, and I never want to take that for granted.

Take a moment today to notice the trees around you — in your yard, along your street, or in a favorite park. Even the smallest act of care makes a difference.

If you’d like ideas for planting, nurturing, or simply celebrating trees this season, my Arbor Day post is full of inspiration to help you connect with nature and bring a little more beauty into your world.

From my heart to the Earth,

💞
