The Art of Escapism: 4 Simple Ways to Create More Joy, Creativity & Inspiration in Everyday Life

What Escapism is (and why we need it)

Escapism is often misunderstood as avoidance. But healthy escapism is different. It’s a gentle shift in perspective, a pause that allows your imagination to awaken, and a way to feel fully alive.

Healthy escapism can:

  • Reduce stress

  • Spark creativity

  • Help you feel more present

  • Increase joy in everyday life

  • Strengthen emotional resilience

It’s about seeing life through a playful, curious lens — like turning your days into a scavenger hunt.

Intentionally Come Alive

All of these things are simple, yet when chosen intentionally, they have the power to stir our imagination, interrupt routine, and help us feel more alive.

When we feel alive, we are naturally happier, more creative, and more receptive to the beauty around us.

Pay attention to what lights you up.

What books, movies, TV shows, music, art, conversations, or podcasts make you feel expanded? Those are clues pointing you toward joy.

The art of escapism is really the art of awareness.

4 Simple Ways to Escape

(and Feel More Alive)

1. Watch TV & Movies with an Artist’s Eye

Most of us turn on a show to relax. But what if you watched it differently?

Notice:

  • The color palette of the sets

  • Wardrobe choices

  • Lighting and camera angles

  • The way rooms are styled

  • The emotion each scene evokes

This is all art.

Someone made intentional choices to make you feel something.

One of my favorites is The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Beyond the brilliant writing, the costumes, set design, and styling are exquisite. Every wall color, bookcase, and accessory has been thoughtfully curated — much like a painter layering color and texture.

Try watching your favorite shows with an artist’s eye. It will fuel your creativity and inspire new ideas.

2. Read Books That Transport You

Books are portals. They ignite imagination, help us grow, and carry us somewhere else entirely.

Maybe that’s Italy in Under the Tuscan Sun. Or a sun-soaked island in Jimmy Buffett’s Tales from Margaritaville or A Salty Piece of Land. Or a quiet reflection in Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh.

Books expand our inner worlds — and when our inner world expands, so does our life. Keep a running list of books that transport you, and revisit them whenever you need renewal.

3. Prioritize Deep Connection

Escapism isn’t always solitary. Time with friends who truly get you, conversations that move beyond small talk, and laughter that lingers are forms of everyday joy.

Connection widens perspective, challenges us, and renews our energy. Who in your life makes you feel revitalized after spending time together?

Consider reaching out. Schedule the coffee. Make the call.

4. Grow Your Mind with Inspiring Podcasts

Podcasts are one of the easiest ways to expand your thinking. You can listen while walking, painting, or folding laundry. I often have a notebook nearby to capture insights and ideas.

Some favorites that inspire me:

Listening to others’ perspectives grows your inner world — and your creativity flourishes as a result.

“Life is more manageable when thought of as a scavenger hunt as opposed to a surprise party.”

~ Jimmy Buffett

I Believe

Life is not something that happens to us. It’s something we participate in. That’s the heart of my work — in paintings, affirmations, and writing. Beauty is not accidental. It’s cultivated.

When we see life as a scavenger hunt — full of small, miraculous clues — even ordinary days begin to shimmer.

Miraculous clues to your joy are everywhere. You just have to open your eyes and heart.

May your day be filled with small joys, creative sparks, and connection.

P.S. If this list spoke to you, feel free to save it, share it with a friend, or return to it whenever you need a reminder that small kindnesses matter.
